Australian Open-falling in love with “the tennis”

I was never a huge fan of tennis. I loved the outfits. I always wanted a little white pleated skirt. I knew of Serena – Venus and anything mainstream.

I was fortunate enough to visit Australia – Melbourne – twice. My travel mates are huge tennis fans so tickets to Australian Open was a must for this crew.

This is what I learnt by my first introduction to real tennis….

Travel for sporting events is a great way to compliment the site seeing on your adventures. Even if you can’t arrange for tickets for Rod Laver (main court) or Hisense you can purchase a grounds pass to watch the practice courts, take in a less high profile match at Margaret court, watch on the big screens throughout the grounds and just join in the tomfoolery.

Now my tips to survive the Australian Open:

1. Dress light. It is hot. Hotter than hot. Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. A frozen coca cola will become your new bestie.

2. Plan to spend the full day. Watching the match is fun but the Heineken and Jacob’s Creek beer / wine garden is awesome. Sitting on loungers drink in hand watching on the big screen under the stars.

3. Be prepared to smile a lot. The energy of this experience is overwhelming. Go with the flow and live it!

4. Be prepared to meet people from all over the world in the garden or in your seats. I’m a chatty one and this was a highlight – I love travel and I love travelers. We all have such great stories to share.

5. Do not talk when the ball is in play!! I’m a talker so this was a challenge for me.

6. Bring a great camera! Lots of great photo opportunities to test your skills and kit!

As you can read I’m a convert. This was a highlight of my Australia trip in 2012 and so much so I went back in 2013. Hmmmm … 2014? Is that crazy talk.

Have you been?

About the Author

I don't travel to escape I travel to self discover. To see different parts of the world to build my personal tool kit. I enjoy the path less travelled to truly learn about the traditions and nuances of my fellow citizens of this great world. Born and raised in Toronto of Trinidadian descent I never forget my roots and as much as I love leaving on that jet plane I always find satisfaction in coming home to my great city to share the tales of my great adventures with my friends and family.
